Quinta Vintage

QUINTA DO RETIRO NOVO VINTAGE

A Quinta do Retiro Novo vintage is produced exclusively from grapes from this vineyard in excellent years when the style of the year creates an individuality and an expression of the single location in the final wine.

A Quinta do Retiro Novo vintage typically will mature earlier than a Krohn vintage.

QUINTA DO RETIRO NOVO VINTAGE YEARS

Retiro Novo Vintage 2011

Tasting Note
Deep red colour. Fully-bodied. Fruit aroma.Balanced tannins. Drinkable now but will profit from a long ageing in the bottle.

Viticultural Year
Wet and cold weather in winter. Good flowering conditions, but then the vines had to be submitted to several treatments to avoid diseases. Extreme heat at the end of June caused damages to many vineyards and reduced the yield. Harvest started in the first days of September and was done in general under a favourable weather. Remarkable quality.

Retiro Novo Vintage 2009

Viticultural Year

Cold, rainy winter. Budburst and flowering occurred in the usual periods under normal conditions, but seemed to predict a relatively small yield. Temperature in June and July was below average, and there was even some rain. August was very hot, causing the grapes to reach a high level of maturity.

Harvest began in the first days of September under a high temperature. The grapes were in a good state, very sweet but lacked a bit of acidity. The yield was lower than expected. The quality was in general rather good.

Retiro Novo Vintage 2007

Tasting Notes

Dark purple, almost black in colour. Dark cherry and blueberry on the nose. Medium to full bodied with medium tannins. Loaded with woodland fruit, spice and cherry flavours. Very attractive and a promising finish.

Viticultural Year

Very rainy Winter. Due to unfavourable weather conditions during flowering there was some millerandage (poor and uneven fruit set), which made crop-thinning unnecessary. Heatness and humidity caused the need to treat the vines to avoid diseases. Summer was not as hot as in the previous years and there was even some rain, but two weeks before harvesting the maturation process benefited from a higher temperature.

Vinification was done under ideal conditions – dry weather (except for two or three days of light, harmless rain) and moderate temperatures. Quality proved to be of a high standard.

Retiro Novo Vintage 2005

Tasting Notes

Deep red colour, almost black. Still a bit closed in the nose but showing a big potential of distinguished fruity aromas. Unctuous and very well structured. Balanced tannins. Long finish. Drinkable now, but with a long ageing capability.

Viticultural year

Extremely dry winter and spring. Very good flowering conditions. Hot summer – many vines deeply suffered from the dryness, but before the harvest one or two small rainshowers improved maturity of the grapes. Average yield, uneven quality, but some excellent Ports.

Retiro Novo Vintage 2004

Tasting Notes

Dark blue, nearly black in colour. Mulberry and dark woodland fruit. Delicate cedary and floral scents are set against a well-defined fruity background of blackcurrant and plum. The deceptively supple middle palate gives way to a long finish, revealing firm well integrated tannins. A beautifully balanced wine, understated and harmonious, justifying the house’s reputation as a master of the Port blend.

Viticultural Year

Very dry year, with good flowering conditions. Some rainfalls in August were extremely helpful for the maturation process of the grapes. In the first half of September it rained again, but the grapes were not damaged by the weather. The yield was lower than in the previous year, and the quality proved to be much better than expected.

SILVER MEDAL (Sélections Mondiales des Vins 2008, Canada).

Retiro Novo Vintage 2000

Tasting Notes

Dark purple fruit. Rich, ripe, fresh black fruit aromas. Rounded, well structured, blackberry and chocolate flavours. Good rich fruit intensity and tannin balance.

Viticultural Year

A wet 1999 harvest was followed by a cold and dry Winter with almost no rain. April and May were very wet, June and July very dry and the first half of August extremely hot. Harvest started on 20th September. The resulting wines were big and full bodied with intense colour and very attractive aromas.
The turn of the century was heralded by the production of exceptional Port wines, notably so in the Douro Valley.
